Course Overview:
The introduction of the concept of Dual Diagnosis has been a field-altering development in the treatment of addictive disorders. However, as the body of research and literature has expanded in the psychiatric, psychological and biological sciences, perhaps it is time to re-examine the construct of dual diagnosis and expand it to include a broader range of considerations and their influence on the process and treatment of addiction and other psychiatric disorders. This presentation will attempt to weave developmental theory, brain biology, polyvagal theory, family systems, psychodynamic theory, trauma and attachment theory into the Dual Diagnosis paradigm. Furthermore, by using case studies, we will apply these concepts in such a way as to broaden our understanding of our patients so that we may develop more comprehensive, individualized and effective treatment models.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completing this intermediate-level course, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe an overview of polyvagal theory and how it might affect the presentation of psychiatric symptoms.
  2. Explain how traumas occurring during specific developmental phases might impact an adult’s behavior, personality, relationships and mood.
  3. List three factors that influence the development and tenacity of maladaptive behaviors and apply this as a practical formulation to their own patients.
  4. Assess how a collaborative approach of team members, with different knowledge bases and skill sets, can benefit diagnosis and treatment planning, as well as lead to better outcomes.
