Neuro-Genetics and Addiction:

The science of Neuro-genetics is being propelled into the forefront as a more analytical and novel approach to addiction treatment. Once such approach that is getting a tremendous amount of interest by healthcare organizations is the treatment of neuro-genetics.

Certain genes potentially impact how well an individual can control substance and non-substance addictive behaviors including cravings. Approximately 50% of your overall risk for addiction is genetic. The reward pathway underlying addiction is well documented. Neuroscientists now understand that natural sequence variation within each gene underpinning the brain reward cascade can contribute to a person’s unique total addiction risk. Certain known genetic variations (termed “risk variations”) are now clearly linked to an increased risk of developing addictive behaviors.

Scientific evidence suggests that your genetic risk for Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) is directly correlated to how many of these addiction risk variations you carry. Substantial neuroscience research links drug use and related disorders with specific genes and genetic variants; alcohol, heroin, cocaine, nicotine, and narcotic abuse, along with other addictive behaviors like overeating, gambling, online gaming, and aberrant sexual activity.

Polygenic complexes of genes drive most of our heredity-based actions, suggesting that genetic panels or algorithms organized into genetic indexes, such as a Genetic Addiction Risk Score (GARS) may be valuable clinically to determine risk. Understanding that the abnormal functions of these brain systems can be due to specific genetic factors interacting with the environment leading to epigeneticeffects is likely to lead to better treatment.
