Program Summary:

Summary of Program Content: It is crucial that body image be addressed beyond the cognitive realm to heal one's relationship with their body in an effort to battle an eating disorder. Honoring the body's sensory abilities and felt emotions will teach the client to access to their body as self - replacing the likelihood of body disconnect. Techniques used in the newly emerging field of body image therapy, stress the importance of skills of "attunement", "kinesthetic awareness", "kinesthetic empathy" and "body scanning". These acquired skills combined with techniques of cognitive approaches ( Eg. mindfulness, cognitive/behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy) allow for a deeper connection to a "felt sense" of reality as they link pathways between the body and the brain.

Learning Objectives:

  • Better understand the complexities of body image.
  • Become familiar with the new evolving endeavor of body image therapy in treating eating disorders.
  • Gain insight into the importance of body image therapy in the treatment of eating disorders/ disordered eating.
  • Learn methods to assess and combat body image dissatisfaction and distortion.
  • Promote awareness of social media's messages impacting BI and EDs.
  •  Practice a body image technique by engaging in a guided experiential task.
  • Observe or engage in experiential therapy tasks via guided role play.
  • Recognize the importance of proper training in the field of expressive art therapies, and eating disorder treatment.
  • Expand one's knowledge of "theory and practice".
